UK Government Introduces Cyber Security and Resilience Bill

The UK government has taken a significant step forward in safeguarding the country's digital infrastructure with the introduction of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. This new legislation seeks to bolster cyber defences, safeguard essential digital services, and respond to the escalating threat of cyber-attacks. Building upon the NIS Regulations 2018, the bill extends its coverage to encompass a wider range of digital services and supply chains. Notably, it mandates ransomware reporting, grants enhanced powers to regulatory bodies, and broadens the existing regulatory framework.

This action comes in response to recent cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure, such as the NHS and the Ministry of Defence. The bill also addresses the growing threat posed by cyber-attacks on supply chains. The government's initiative is crucial in light of the increasing number of cyber-attacks, particularly in the healthcare sector, and underscores the importance of enhancing cyber resilience.

The bill is seen as a positive step towards economic growth, aligning with the government's commitment to fostering a secure and prosperous digital economy. In addition to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, a separate Digital Information and Smart Data Bill will include measures aimed at enhancing the UK's digital and data protection framework.
